Sheraton Hotel Demolition Underway
July 28, 2014 — Demolition work is underway on the abandoned Sheraton Hotel property in downtown Gary.
A skeleton crew from Michigan-based Homrich Inc. tore down the pedestrian walkway between the hotel parking garage and the Hudson-Campbell Fitness Center. The Gary Redevelopment Commission awarded Homrich a contract totalling almost 1-point-8 million dollars last year to demolish the hotel, parking lot and two pedestrian walkways, one over Broadway and the other over Massachusetts Street.
City officials are projecting the demolition work to be complete by October.
The hotel first opened as a Holiday Inn in 1968 and closed four years later. It was remodeled and reopened as a Sheraton Hotel in 1978, only to close for good seven years later.
