Several Northwest Indiana Towns Land on Unsafe List
The cites of Gary, East Chicago and Hammond have placed in the top 10 on a list of the 10 most dangerous places in Indiana, according to the Movoto Real Estate Blog.
Movoto looked at cities with a population of 10,000 or more and pulled crime numbers from the FBI 2013 Uniform Crime Report. It weighted violent crimes, murders, and property crimes more heavily than total crimes.
Gary came in at the number-one with 883 violent crimes. East Chicago placed at number four with 196 violent crimes breaking down to 14 rapes, 91 robberies, 81 assaults, 10 murders and 1,462 property crimes.
East Chicago Police Chief Mark Becker says the 2013 numbers mark a big improvement and is addressing the current level of crime. Becker says the new technology allow police to collect evidence to connect the dots that leads to putting these people in jail. Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson questioned the credibility of the Movoto website and said the crime rate is improving in Gary. The city of Hammond ranked number seven on Movoto’s list, with the third highest number of violent crimes and 3,889 total crimes in 2013.
