Salvation Army’s Angel Trees Just for Kids
December 2, 2013 — During winter holidays The Salvation Army’s efforts are highly visible due to bright red kettles and ringing bells, but another of their programs might make the biggest impact on some of Lake County’s smallest citizens.
Captain Rebecca Simmons is the Lake County coordinator for The Salvation Army and she visited Lakeshore News Tonight to speak with Kristyn Estes about holiday giving opportunities and the Angel Tree program effects on hundreds of children in Lake County.
The annual Angel Tree Program provides toys, clothing, special-needs gifts or other wish list items to families experiencing financial hardship. The Salvation Army identifies families in need through its corps community centers and social service agencies and provides these families gifts for their children and food during the holiday season.
Donations to the program are being accepted from now until December 13th and the gifts are distributed to families just in time for Christmas.
Since 1865 The Salvation Army has been helping to assure that the basic needs of those in our community, regardless of their circumstances or religious beliefs, are being met. That’s the mission of The Salvation Army all year round.
Simmons says, “This year, hundreds of children in Lake County area won’t receive a single gift for Christmas without the help of generous businesses and individuals in the Northwest Indiana area. At this time, we have 3,749 children whose parents have already requested assistance and this number may continue to grow.”
Individuals wishing to assist can find angel tree tags at their local Salvation Army or Walmart. If a tag cannot be located, an item costing about $30 which is appropriate for a child younger than teenage can be purchased.
All items can be dropped off at a local Salvation Army location or you may call to make other arrangements.
