Rough Waters On Lake Michigan Today

August 23, 2013 —  Visitors to Lake Michigan are being warned not to go into the water on Friday, until at least late tonight, because of dangerous swimming conditions.

The National Weather Service issued a Beach Hazards Advisory because of high waves and dangerous rip and structural currents.

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away from shore… which occur most often at low spots or breaks in sandbars.   Rip currents can sweep you out away from shore into deeper water.   Structural currents form along piers and breakwalls where longshore currents and wave action flow into the structure.   Structural currents can sweep you out out away from shore along the pier structure.
