Purdue freshmen in spotlight for opener
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Five first-year freshmen, including linebacker Ja’Whan Bentley and defensive end Gelen Robinson, are expected to see significant playing time Saturday when Purdue opens the season against Western Michigan in Ross-Ade Stadium.
Bentley is listed as a starter. Robinson is listed as a backup, but coach Darrell Hazell said Tuesday that the son of former Purdue All-American basketball player and NBA forward Glenn Robinson will likely be on the field early.
Freshmen wide receivers Gregory Phillips and Trae Hart will share time with upperclassmen against Western Michigan, and freshmen center Kirk Barron is listed as the backup at center. Each team is coming off a 1-11 season.
Hazell says sophomore wide receiver Cameron Posey has been suspended for the Western Michigan game for a violation of unspecified team rules.
