Purdue attempts to duplicate 2012 season finish
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Purdue is three wins away from going to another bowl game. Just like the Boilermakers were two years ago.
The Boilermakers (3-6, 1-4) faced the same scenario in 2012 when they also were 3-6 heading into the season’s 10th game, needing three victories to extend their season. Purdue beat Iowa, Illinois and Indiana to earn a Heart of Dallas Bowl bid, losing that game to Oklahoma State, 58-14.
This time, the Boilermakers must beat No. 25 Wisconsin, then Northwestern in West Lafayette and Indiana in Bloomington to finish the regular season 6-6.
“That really drives our guys,” second-year Purdue coach Darrell Hazell said Tuesday afternoon. “They see that. We don’t talk a whole lot about it, but they are intelligent young men. So they understand, and that fuels those guys, especially our 17 seniors.
“They understand that they have only two more opportunities to play in (Ross-Ade Stadium). That is very important to them. They want to make every opportunity count.”
