Public Hearing Today On GPTC Route Expansion

March 6, 2014 — The second of two public hearings will be held Thursday afternoon, on plans to extend Gary Public Transportation Corporation service into areas of Hammond that used to be on the Regional Bus Authority route schedule.

The hearing will be at 5:30 p.m., at the Metro Center.  The proposed changes, if approved by the GPTC board, could be made perhaps as early this spring.

The Tri-City Connections route change would serve Ivy Tech Community College’s East Chicago campus and the East Chicago South Shore station.  A new feeder route would run through Hammond residential neighborhoods and commercial districts.  It could serve Purdue University Calumet and Calumet Shopping Center in Munster.

A July 2013 survey on Facebook and Twitter showed potential riders wanted bus service in Hammond to the 165th Street retail corridor, South Indianapolis Boulevard, South Calumet Avenue and Purdue Calumet.
