Project to Dredge Grand Calumet River Making Headway
November 15, 2013 — A project to clear sediment from the Grand Calumet river is making headway.
Ashley Snyder is the Remedial Action Plan Coordinator for Grand Calumet River Area of Concern with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management. She says, the sediments made up of oils, grease and other chemicals which have collected on the bottom of the river for years will be removed by the dredging process.
Snyder says there is a lot of funding through partnerships, including private businesses and local municipalities working together through the dredging process.
Snyder says once the dredging process is finished, Northwest Indiana Lakes and rivers will be safer for both communities and wildlife.
