Private Support Sought For Chellberg Farm
November 14, 2014 — PORTER (AP) — Officials at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore are seeking private sector proposals for re-establishing a working farm at the 1885 brick farmhouse on its property.
A farmer on the park staff and volunteers had the Chellberg Farm bustling with livestock and a thriving orchard until the park was hit with budget cuts. Park administrator Liz McConnell tells The “Times” that all ideas for the 80-acre site will be considered. The park service’s plan is to lease the farm for 10 years and perhaps longer.
McConnell says while the farm is not currently operational, the structures have been maintained and are in good condition.
The site represents a typical area early 1900s farmstead and is named for a Swedish immigrant family which lived there.
