Powers doubles up at US cycling championships
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) — Alison Powers became the first rider in eight years to sweep the U.S. cycling championships, pulling away from the field in the final stretch Monday to win the women’s road race.
Eric Marcotte held off teammate Travis McCabe to become the surprise men’s champion. Alex Howes finished third in a race that was marked by a serious crash involving time trial champion Taylor Phinney, who was transported to a hospital with a fractured bone in his leg.
Phinney had hoped to ride in the Tour de France later this summer.
Powers, who won the time trial on Friday, is the first cyclist to win both events in the same weekend since Kristin Armstrong in 2006. Megan Guarnier finished second and Evelyn Stevens third.
