Porter Hospital Tax Abatement Review At Special Council Hearing

June 24, 2014 — The Porter County Council holds a special hearing Tuesday evening, after the board’s regular meeting, to decide the fate of the 10-year tax abatement that the Council previously granted to Porter Regional Hospital.

Council members voted 7-0 earlier this month to make a “preliminary determination” that the hospital wasn’t meeting all the terms it had agreed to in the 2009 abatement resolution.  Porter Hospital officials are protesting the decision.

Chief Financial Officer Cheryl Harmon says the hew facility’s met the Council’s demands of hiring more full-time employees, creating new salaries, construction jobs, investment in new technology and continuing to provide EMS service for Porter County. Harmon also contends that the assessment for tax purposes should be much lower.

The County Council can vote after the public hearing, and the hospital can file a court appeal  if they endorse their earlier decision.
