Porter County Recycling Fee Hike Up For Review

August 25, 2014 — The Recycling and Waste Reduction District of Porter County is poised to boost the annual fee charged of each household from 15 dollars to 20 dollars. The proposal is expected to come up for a vote by the solid waste district board on September 16th.

The fee increase would generate an additional $327,000 a year toward the district’s $995,000 annual budget, which is money that Executive Director Therese Davis said could be used to fund a variety of targeted needs and wants.  They include expanding the county’s popular composting and recycling drop-off sites.

Davis says no one spoke out at a public hearing held last week on the proposed fee increase, which would be outside the property tax caps.  The district board has the final say over the increase, but it will remain up to the Porter County Council to approve the use of the money.
