October 23, 2013 — Porter County Council and County Commissioners are going into 2014 roughly $2.5-million dollars in the hole.  The council spent hours in a budget hearing last night deciding the county’s needs and priorities.

Porter County Council President Bob Poparad said the board agreed in a four-to-two vote to hire nine new jailers and open the third pod of the jail because of overcrowding.

The council says it is searching for new ways to invest money, but has not made any final decisions yet.
