August 21, 2013 — The Lake County Sheriff’s Department says a Lake Ridge Middle School student was beaten today by two women while the student was waiting for her school bus.

Department spokesperson Sgt. Patti Van Til says the girl was one of seven students waiting for a school bus near 24th and Gerry Street in Gary around 7:00 a.m. when a car drove up to them.  Van Til says the black four-door Chevrolet Impala had two black men and two black women who, “exited the vehicle and advised the students that something bad would happen to them if they didn’t give up their money and cell phones.”

Van Til says that after one student responded that they didn’t have anything and that she was going to call police, then one of the female suspects, called “LaKiesha,” hit the student in her face.  Van Til says the second female suspect joined the conflict by hitting the girl until a nearby resident yelled that she had called the police, when the suspects then left the area in their vehicle.

The Sheriff’s Department says,

“The suspects are described as follows:

1st female:   mid 20’s, light skinned African American, dyed blonde hair in a ponytail, wearing a pink shirt and blue jean shorts.

2nd female:   mid 30’s, dark skinned African American, wearing a blue shirt with blue and purple pajama bottoms, and a white and black hat.

2 males:   late 30’s or early 40’s.”

Van Til says the students did not recognize the suspects, and the student victim sustained a bloody nose and lip.

She says police believe the same group of suspects approached a man in the 6800 block of West 25th Avenue in Gary, asking for directions until one of them pushed the resident who then fled.

Van Til says another report involves a resident near 25th and Henry Street in Gary, who also reported that a sixth grade student waiting for a bus was approached by this group of suspects asking if the student had seen their lost puppy.  “At this point the parent yelled to the suspects who then fled.”

Van Til asks anyone with related information to contact Lake County Sheriff’s Department School Resource Officer Zabrina Harris at the Lake Ridge Middle School at 219.980.0730.
