Phil Proctor: Hoosier Renaissance Actor – from Firesign Theatre to Drunken Monkey and More!
This edition of “A LOOK AT THE ARTS with Tom Lounges” originally aired on Wednesday, Sept 10, 2014
“A LOOK AT THE ARTS with Tom Lounges” welcomes to the Lakeshore Public Radio airwaves — veteran entertainer PHIL PROCTOR — an award-winning actor, singer, writer and producer whose extensive career has included stage, television and film.
Born in Goshen, Indiana this Hoosier export landed in New York where his show biz journey began as a child actor and a singer on Broadway. Although he went to school in Manhattan, Proctor spent his summers in Goshen, giving young Phil the best of both worlds — rural farm living and big city hustle and bustle. Both served him well in creating the plethora of characters and voices he would come to create.
A true Renaissance artist equally comfortable on stage, big screen, small screen and on radio, Proctor’s sharp wit and voice have entertained generations. Early on as a founding member of the legendary three time Grammy-nominated comedy group – FIRESIGN THEATRE – who debuted in the late 1960s and broke down many barriers as they pioneered a new brand of comedy – and more recently in films and on television.
He is currently doing audio books for GALAXY PRESS and continues to voice characters for several popular video/computer games, as well as maintaining a busy career doing character voices for animated and family films.
Proctor’s voice has starred in to name but a very few projects — “Finding Nemo,” “Aladdin,” “The Rugrats,” “The Amazing Spiderman,” with one of his most famous being the French speaking “drunk monkey” in the “Dr. Dolittle” film franchise.
Phil is currently working on two new Pixar movies—”The Good Dinosaur” and “Inside Out” — while also overseeing the re-issuing of vintage Firesign Theatre audio, video, and print archives; as well as writing a book based on his colorful career.
This show is interesting from start to end as Phil slips IN and OUT of various character voices throughout the course of the program.
