Pence Says State’s HIP Has Extension
September 3, 2013 — Governor Mike Pence says Indiana will continue serving uninsured Hoosiers with its Healthy Indiana Plan, known as HIP.
The federal government has granted Indiana a waiver to continue HIP through December 2014. The plan provides a medical expense account to low-income Hoosiers who do not have access to employer health coverage.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services approved the waiver under a set of special terms and conditions. Under those requirements, eligibility for the plan will be limited to certain adults with incomes under the federal poverty level.
The state will be required to develop a transition plan for Hoosiers who will no longer be eligible for the program. Governor Pence says managing enrollment will allow the state to maintain the program’s fiscal sustainability.
