December 19, 2013 — By Jerry Howard
Indiana Sons and Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors say tonight at Pearl Harbor survivor John Latko of Hammond has died.
Sons and Daughters Indiana State Chairman James Laud says Lakto passed away yesterday. He was a Marine aboard the USS West Virginia, who gained popularity in a Japanese attack photo as the man in a boat pulling another man out of the water with the USS West Virginia burning in the background. Laud says Latko finally met the man he saved 50 years later.
He was also involved with the local chapter of the Pearl Harbor Survivors, as well as the armed forces memorial in Munster. Laud says Latko’s wake will occur Sunday 2-7 p.m. at Burns Kish funeral home at 5840 Hohman Avenue in Hammond.
He was 94 years old. Photo shows him at a Pearl Harbor memorial service in 2003.
