Panthers GM ‘thankful’ Newton was wearing seatbelt

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman says quarterback Cam Newton remains hospitalized following an automobile accident and is still expected to be released Wednesday.

Gettleman said in a telephone interview Wednesday, “I’m just thankful he was wearing a seatbelt and everyone involved is all right.”

Newton suffered two fractures in his lower back when his truck crashed and overturned in a two-car accident Tuesday.

Gettleman says he still has no details on what happened or when Newton will return to action.

The GM was at the league owner’s meeting in Irving, Texas on Tuesday when he received a call from his office about the crash.

Gettleman says he was horrified by the photos of the accident scene and that he wasn’t able to breathe a sigh of relief until much later.
