Indiana State Police say a blown tire caused two fatal accidents along Interstate 65 Saturday in Jasper County. ISP Sergeant Ann Wojas said John J. Malone was a passenger in a van going north to Chicago when he was ejected from the vehicle as it rolled over after a tire blowout. ISP says 20-year-old Malone was going home from Indiana University, along with passenger Michael D. Rende who was seriously injured, while passengers Jason Blackman and Jacob Newman received minor injuries. Driver Mario Guagliardo was not injured.
ISP says that about an hour later as traffic was stopped at the accident, a car driven by Shannon Morrison of Wheatfield swerved to avoid backed up traffic and hit an SUV driven by Christin Gelinas of Valparaiso. The impact caused the SUV to roll over, ejecting 51-year-old Melissa Gelinas from the car; she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Morrison was cited for unsafe lane movement.
