Off-duty Officer, Trucker Hurt In Clinic Parking Lot Incident
A semi-truck driver was shot and an off-duty police officer sustained physical violence injuries yesterday, outside of a controversial health clinic.
Northwest Indiana Major Crimes Task Force spokesman Bob Byrd says the shooting took place in the parking lot of the Planned Parenthood clinic on 86th Place and Connecticut Street.
Planned Parenthood of Indiana issued a statement, saying the off-duty police officer worked as a security guard at the health center. The security officer was involved in a fight with another person, possibly over a parking citation. Planned Parenthood says the other person involved is not affiliated with their agency. None of the injuries was life threatening.
A semi truck was parked outside Planned Parenthood as police officers searched the area. Byrd says the Task Force got involved because the incident involved a Merrillville police officer.
The agency issued a statement late yesterday, saying “As a leading provider of women’s health care, the safety and security of our patients is Planned Parenthood’s top priority today and every day. We are grateful to law enforcement for their swift response.”
