September 23, 2014 — The Associated Press — Northwest Indiana’s Catholic bishop just back from a trip to the Middle East says he worries the window is closing for a peace agreement in the Holy Land.

Gary Diocese Bishop Dale Melczek  joined 17 other bishops on this month’s trip, during which they met with Israeli and Palestinian political leaders and prayed with Jewish, Muslim and Christian religious leaders.

Melczek says the bishops wanted to bolster those discouraged following this summer’s 50-day war in Gaza.

Melczek tells the Post-Tribune that he believes consistent help from the United States is needed to bring peace to the Holy Land.

The bishops’ trip came after Pope Francis visited the same area in May. Those who the bishops met with included retired Israeli President Shimon Peres and Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah.
