August 28, 2013 — Labor Day weekend driving could be less laborious itself for northwest Indiana travelers.

The Indiana Department of Transportation says a road work moratorium for Labor Day weekend begins Friday afternoon and goes until the morning hours of Tuesday, September 3rd.

Lifted road restrictions include the westbound I-80/94 ramp to northbound Cline Avenue in Lake County and Kern Road, between U.S. 31 and Locust Road in South Bend.

INDOT says that wherever possible road restrictions will be removed to ease traffic flow for holiday drivers, though some closures and restrictions will remain intact for projects that can’t safely reopen to traffic, such as:

Restrictions Remaining in Place Over Holiday Weekend

Porter County

I-94 lane restrictions for bridge work, 1.5 miles east of U.S. 20 exit

I-94 lane restrictions for bridge work, 1 miles east of Indiana Toll Road exit

Hammond, Lake County

SR 152 Nine Span Bridge closed

LaPorte County

U.S. 6 Bridge closed, 2 miles east of U.S. 35

Starke County

U.S. 35 Bridge closed, .5 mile south of U.S. 30

St. Joseph County

SR 933 (Lincolnway) Bridge closed, 1 mile west of Elkhart County line

U.S. 31 Bypass lane restrictions, between U.S. 20 exit and Brick/Cleveland exit

SR 23/Five Points area, multiple side street closures in the area

Meanwhile, Munster’s Police Department is advising drivers that traffic there will be reduced to one lane northbound on Calumet Avenue near the intersection of Lions Club Drive (area between Evergreen and Briar) from 8 a.m. Wednesday through Friday for a public works project.

It is asking drivers to proceed with caution in that area or avoid it by using Columbia Avenue as an alternative.
