October 1, 2013 — A Chicago non-profit submitted the lone bid to acquire Mahencha Apartments in Gary and turn it into 32 housing units for moderate and low income residents.

Turnstone Development Inc. offered $35,000 for the crumbling 86-year-old apartment complex that at one time was owned by former Mayor Richard Hatcher. The Gary Redevelopment Commission board tentatively accepted Turnstone’s bid and will meet tomorrow (Wednesday) at 4 p.m. to officially accept it.  The board must also review the developer’s financial and design plan.

General contractor would be Burling Builders of Chicago, run by Elzie Higginbottom, a reported financial backer of Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson.  Higginbottom is also on the Turnstone Development board of directors.
