December 12, 2013

Today on the show, we’ll look at the final vote on the Illiana expressway before NIRPC. Prior to the show, the board voted to approve the Illiana Expressway. Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson voted in favor of the plan. The final vote was not close, even under a rule which weighted the vote by population. It is the last key public vote on the project, after Illinois approved the project last month. We’ll break down the vote.

In the second half hour, we’ll look at a couple education stories. Nationally, Gary has the fifth highest percentage of students in Charter Schools, according to a new study. Also, State Impact’s Kyle Stokes has been looking at a so-called failing school in Evansville. He’ll talk about whether state take-over is on the table, the way it was for Gary Roosevelt two years ago.

Guests include:

Bill Hanna, ex director of the Regional Development Authority

Jim Pinkerton at INDOT spokesman

Kyle Stokes, State Impact

Russ Simnick, senior director of advocacy at the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools.
