A south Lake County Republican state legislator says he filed the paperwork to seek the state Senate seat currently held by Sue Landske of Cedar Lake.

Eleventh District Representative Rick Niemeyer says his current term of office ends in 2015.  Landske, whose term also expires after this year, announced earlier this month she will not seek re-election in the wake of her lung cancer diagnosis.  She took over the Senate seat in 1984, after Rick Niemeyer’s father, then-Senator Ernie Niemeyer, became a Lake County Commissioner.

Lake County Republican Party Chairman Dan Dernulc said he is consulting with state party leaders about possible candidates to run for the House seat that Niemeyer would be leaving.
