December 9, 2013 — The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the just-completed Nine Span Bridge in Hammond will be held Monday afternoon at the new bridge on Indianapolis Boulevard.

Lieutenant Governor Sue Ellspermann will join Hammond Mayor Tom McDermott Jr., East Chicago Mayor Anthony Copeland, INDOT and local elected officials for the ceremony and will unveil a historic marker commemorating the old Nine Span Bridge.

Traffic should be going over the new bridge later that day, about 11 months after the 80-plus-year-old iron bridge was closed and demolished.  The new bridge over Gibson Yards is nothing like the old iron span it replaced;  in fact, it looks much like the new Indianapolis Boulevard bridge over the Little Calumet River in Highland.
