INDIANAPOLIS – To avoid overheating and other heat-related injuries to workers, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration now offers an app for smartphones with the capability of calculating a worksite’s heat index.
In 2011, 62 workers nationwide died from heat-related problems. In addition, 100 cases of non-fatal injuries and illnesses caused by overheating were reported in Indiana in 2011.
To prevent such incidents, OSHA has designed the app to also offer workers healthy reminders, such as staying hydrated, taking breaks, identifying heat illnesses and more.
