Nats look to pad their lead
(AP) — The red-hot Washington Nationals can extend their lead over Atlanta in the National League East tonight with a win over the Phillies in Philadelphia. The second-place Braves have the night off. The Nationals currently have an eight-game lead after winning nine of their last 10 games.
National Central leader Milwaukee is on the road tonight for a game with San Diego. The Brewers start the day with a 1 ½ game lead over the Cardinals and five-game spread over Pittsburgh. Tonight the Cards and Pirates are playing in Pittsburgh.
In the NL West the Dodgers remain the team on top, and they have the day off. Second-place San Francisco has a chance to reduce the deficit to four games as the Giants entertain the Rockies.
In the American League the top team in the East is Baltimore, by six games over the Yankees. Tonight the Orioles are home to the Rays while the New Yorkers are at Kansas City, the top team in the AL Central. The Royals can increase their lead over second place Detroit to 2 ½ games with a win as the Tigers have the night off.
The Angels regained first place in the AL West last night, and this evening they face the Marlins in Anaheim while the second place Oakland Athletics are in Houston playing the Astros.
The final two games of the night feature the Red Sox in Toronto and Seattle at home to Texas.
