August 15, 2013 — Cook County, Illinois’ sheriff department says today that Edgar Singleton, Jr. is “no longer on payroll.” Department spokesperson Ben Breit said he received that confirmation today about the now-former Cook County law enforcement officer charged in Lake County, Indiana court this week with murder.

The 61-year-old Chicago man is facing a murder charge for the death of 23-year-old Montress Moss of East Chicago. The Lake County Coroner says Moss died in a Hammond shooting last week.

Police are investigating the shooting as a possible road rage incident, along Indianapolis Boulevard in Hammond.

Lake County court records show both a public defender and a private attorney listed for Singleton’s representation. His case includes a court appearance Monday, then an omnibus hearing this fall.

Singleton was being held without bond in the Lake County Jail.
