Memorial Day Starts Camp for Burn Survivors
This year’s Memorial Day is a starting point for some special survivors.
At Battle Ground, Indiana, close to Interstate 65 near Lafayette, Hoosier Burn Camp is underway, starting Monday for a special week of recovery. Camp Executive Director Mark Koopman says Memorial Day marks the start of a week at camp for young burn survivors from across Indiana, with more than 70 burn survivors this week, at ages 8 to 18. Hoosier Burn Camp gives campers a week of traditional camp activities and programs to build self-esteem and foster friendships.
Koopman says, “The week at camp gives our kids a break from the stares and questions they can get in day to day life. They come to an atmosphere where their scars are normal, where the other kids have had similar experiences, and for a week they can be ‘just one of the kids.'”
Hoosier Burn Camp receives support entirely by donations, allowing campers to attend at no cost to their families.
