Mathis is Player of the Month
January 2, 2014 – Robert Mathis continued his pursuit of the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year award by being named the AFC’s Defensive Player of the Month for a second time this season.
The Indianapolis Colts veteran outside linebacker was cited for his productive December: 19 tackles, five sacks and four forced fumbles. The sack total was the best in the NFL for the month while the forced fumbles tied teammate Jerrell Freeman for the most.
Mathis finished the season with an NFL-high 19.5 sacks. He set club single-season and career (111) records.
Mathis also was named the AFC Player of the Month for October, and is the first Colts player to earn multiple honors since placekicker Mike Vanderjagt was recognized three consecutives months in 2003.
