Three people are dead and 22 were hurt after a massive weather-related pile-up on I-94 near Michigan City. Indiana State Police say that slippery road conditions and reduced visibility caused by heavy lake-effect snow triggered the incident. Snow and whiteout conditions were contributing factors to the massive pile-up.
Eighteen semi-trailers and two box trucks were among 46 vehicles involved in the crash that happened near Michigan City on the busy route between Chicago and Detroit. The eastbound lanes of I-94 reopened at 10 a.m.
Rescuers used Michigan City buses to transport the wounded and provide shelter from the bitter cold.
Indiana State Police spokesperson Sergeant Ann Wojas says the accident investigation could take several weeks to complete.
