Major repairs planned for IUPUI’s natatorium
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Officials are set to announce plans for a renovation of IUPUI’s natatorium and make street improvements around the downtown Indianapolis campus.
Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard and Indiana University President Michael McRobbie are among those scheduled to release details Monday of renovation plans for the 32-year-old building that has hosted numerous major swimming and diving events.
The Indianapolis Star reports that IU and the Lilly Endowment will each contribute $10 million toward the natatorium project. The city will spend $10 million to improve major streets through the campus.
IU officials have said the natatorium’s roof, heating and air conditioning and electrical systems need to be replaced.
Indiana Sports Corp. president Allison Melangton tells WTHR-TV the group will be aggressive about pursuing more aquatic events because of the natatorium project.
