Lugar, Banks, Winfrey Among Medal of Freedom Honorees
November 21, 2013 — Indiana statesman Richard Lugar is a Medal of Freedom honoree.
President Barack Obama honored 16 people yesterday with the Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor. Former United States Senator Lugar received his award at yesterday’s ceremony.
Lugar represented Indiana in the Senate more than 30 years. The President noted his leadership and commitment to reducing the threat of nuclear weapons. Lugar was a Rhodes Scholar and was mayor of Indianapolis.
The President also honored Greater Chicago’s Ernie Banks and Oprah Winfrey. President Obama honored Ernie Banks as “Mr. Cub” for his legendary major league baseball career, and he paid tribute to Oprah Winfrey for her entertainment industry achievements, including becoming the first black woman billionaire.
Other honorees included Bill Clinton, Sally Ride and Dean Smith.
