Lowell Houses Destroyed in Explosion, Fire
September 10, 2013 — The town of Lowell has a pile of debris where at least two homes had stood before explosions last night that destroyed them and left a third house on fire.
Emergency workers worked into the night, scrambling to prevent a propane tank from catching on fire 100 block of 181st Street.
The explosion occurred at about 7:30 last night.
Residents from the other (east) side of Interstate 65 said they felt the explosion in their homes. Others say they felt the shock at least one-quarter mile away from the scene. Firefighters from Hebron, Lowell, Shelby, Porter and Center Township were at the scene battling the fire, and dozens of emergency workers were at the scene as well preparing for injuries.
Fire crews worked overnight to prevent the flames from spreading to a vacant lot near the home where a propane tank was resting. Residents say they believe the two homes that exploded were vacant as was the third that caught fire although authorities have not confirmed that information. The cause of the explosion and resulting fires is under investigation.
