Long: State Should Wait, Watch Before Legalizing Marijuana

INDIANAPOLIS – The leader of the Indiana Senate said Tuesday that a bill to legalize the use and distribution of medical marijuana in Indiana needs work and lawmakers should wait before approving it.
Senate President Pro-Tem David Long, R-Fort Wayne, said the bill – proposed by Sen. Karen Tallian, D-Portage – needs to be “hashed out.” But Long said Indiana should sit back and watch how the rest of the nation handles the controversial topic.
Nearly two dozen states have legalized marijuana for medical purposes. Colorado – which has legalized marijuana for recreational purposes as well – is experiencing conflict with surrounding states that have been affected by the legalization, he said.
Long also said it would be “wise to wait.”
