Local Weight Loss Clinic Owners Face Sentencings
A 57-year-old physician who owned weight loss clinics in northwest Indiana and south suburban Chicago will appear before a judge in federal court in Hammond on Wednesday morning for sentencing, on his guilty-plea to illegally dispensing millions of pills containing amphetamine-based controlled substances to patients. Dr. Rakesh Anand also pleaded guilty to income tax evasion. His 53-year-old wife Meena also pleaded guilty to federal tax evasion, relating to their operation of the clinics and she will be sentenced Wednesday afternoon. They both agreed in the plea agreement to to forfeiture and restitution totaling nearly $5.2 million. The Anands owned and managed Doctors Weight Loss Clinics in Merrillville and Tinley Park and Orland Park. Prosecutors say Dr. Anand and a colleague dispensed the bills without performing physical examinations or any medical tests, and without reviewing patients’ records. They reportedly grossed more than $5 million from their operation of the three weight loss clinics. Judge Joseph Van Bokkelen accepted their plea to the tax evasion charges but deferred Dr. Anand’s plea to the conspiracy charge until his sentencing.
