June 4, 2014 — The National Park Service is preparing a draft Environmental Assessment for what’s being called the “East Branch of the Little Calumet River Use Management Plan” for Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, and is seeking public comment.

A public meeting is planned for June 10th, beginning at 6 p.m., at the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center in Porter to discuss the project.

The Park Service wants to look into all recreational options and their environmental effects along the river that flows through the National Lakeshore.  The river was divided into four sections (referred to as reaches) for the study, based upon the boundaries of the National Lakeshore and environmental conditions.   The management plan is a collaborative effort of the National Park Service, the United States Forest Service, and the Urban Waters Initiative.

An online copy of the draft Environmental Assessment for the East Branch of the Little Calumet River Use Management Plan will be available for review starting on June 11th at http://parkplanning.nps.gov/indu.
