Little Calumet River Flood Control Drills Set For March, April

Share Tweet Email

Motorists who travel on Kennedy Avenue just south of the I-80-94 interchange along the Little Calumet River will have to find an alternate route around midnight on March 20th.  That’s when Little Calumet River Basin Development Commission executive director Dan Repay says first responders and engineers plan to conduct a full-scale flood control drill at the bridge over the river.

The March 20th bridge closure will take several hours. There’ll be another full-scale flood control drill on April 12th at a Little Calumet River bridge near the I-U Northwest campus in Gary.  Repay says it’ll be that city’s first drill,  to demonstrate that crews can close a street to keep back floodwaters. The exact street hasn’t yet been selected.
