Share Tweet Email

A lightning strike started a fire that destroyed two floors of a condominium building in Schererville.

Fire Chief Joe Kruzan says lightning struck the roof of the building in the Le Jardin complex in the 200 block of Joliet Street yesterday afternoon and water pipes burst. He says the second and third floors were destroyed. Firefighters battled the blaze for more than three hours.

Property manager Shelly Saber says 31 residents were displaced by the fire.  No one was reportedly hurt.

Schererville Town Manager Bob Volkmann says employees from a nearby bank called 911 after  they saw smoke coming out of the top of the building.
