Last Mail Processed At Gary Center In Late Summer 2015
September 25, 2014 — Lakeshore Public Radio–
The U.S. Postal Service’s Gary Processing and Distribution Center will close sometime in late summer 2015. Mary Dando of the Postal Service Greater Indiana District office confirmed to the Lakeshore by e-mail Wednesday that some mail is already being processed in Bedford Park, Illinois — and says that all of the mail done by the Gary center will be processed in Illinois on or after July 25th, 2015. But Dando says that exact date is subject to change.
About 156 local jobs will be affected, with about 30-percent of the workers from Gary and the rest from across Northwest Indiana.
A study of Gary’s facility in February 2011 included a public hearing at which Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson and Congressman Pete Visclosky testified against the closing.
The Postal Service’s South Bend center is closing and consolidating with its center in Fort Wayne.
The Postal Service’s nationwide “rationalization” plan was put “on-hold” last year to allow Congress to act on the private agency’s request for more operating funds. Congress never allocated any additional funds, and the plans were re-activated on June 30th.
The Postal Service is refocusing its mission lately on handling more parcels to make up for having fewer first-class letters to process in recent years, and has partnered with companies like Amazon to do their deliveries.
