September 12, 2013 — A LaPorte man is dead after his vehicle became stuck at a railroad crossing and was struck by a train.

LaPorte County Sheriff’s Police responded to the scene just south of Highway 6 and Highway 39 near Union Mills around 2 am.  The crew of a westbound Canadian National freight train reported that the train had struck a Dodge Caravan which was stopped on the tracks.

40-year-old Brian Massengill was found dead inside that vehicle.

The crossing was closed for construction and police believe Massengill drove around a set of barricades north of the crossing before his vehicle became stuck.

Police say alcohol is believed to be a factor in the collision, as Massengill had a blood alcohol level nearly five times the legal limit.
