A La Porte County businessman is charged with 14 counts of felony crimes including auto theft. La Porte County Detective Andrew Thomas says 38 year-old Erik Smith of Wheatfield was running a business called Steroid Diesel on U.S. 30 in Wanatah. He was evicted then set up shop on U.S. 421 in Westville. The Sheriff’s Department launched an investigation in November after receiving complaints from unhappy customers.  Search warrants were executed at the Wanatah and Westville locations. Sheriff’s Detectives located items there that were reported to have been taken, including a vehicle that had been reported stolen in Newton County. U.S. Marshals took Smith into custody. He was being held in the La Porte County Jail in lieu of a $7,500.00 bond, but bonded out. Thomas says he has a hearing in LaPorte Circuit Court at 8 a.m. March 25th.
