Lakefront Park Closed Due To Storm Damage
November 3, 2014 — Lakefront Park in Whiting is closed until further notice because a Halloween night storm with winds gusting more than 70 miles per hour and waves topping 20 feet high caused significant damage.
City employees barricaded entrances into the park Saturday so crews can clear roadways and clean up damage. Waves coming off the lake were so powerful that they moved shoreline armor stones that weighed as much as 20,000 pounds. The 26-acre park had just been re-dedicated as part of a 48 million dollar redevelopment initiative.
Whiting Mayor Joe Stahura says the city’s endured high winds and strong storms in the past, but has never experienced winds powerful enough to take down so many large trees and cause as much damage as the Friday night storm.
