Kibble Kitchen Pet Pantry Hosts Awareness Event for Homeless Animals

Portage — The Kibble Kitchen Pet Pantry will host an awareness event for homeless animals at Countryside Park in Portage from noon to 6 p.m. on August 17. The event, in its second year, observes International Homeless Animals’ Day, where organizations around the world come together to raise awareness about the pet overpopulation epidemic.

Contributing to that epidemic are the additional animals that have found themselves homeless because their owners can no longer afford to care for them. “With all of the research and the stories pointing toward the importance of having pets in our lives, losing them in the midst of a financial crisis can be devastating,” said Kibble Kitchen Pet Pantry founder and Executive Director, Michelle Duca. “Pet owners who have received assistance from Kibble Kitchen in the form of food and supplies have avoided breaking such an important bond.”

Evidence shows that dogs have a healing power around individuals who have experienced traumatic events, and that people who are around dogs have increased levels of dopamine, endorphins and adrenaline, all helpful in relieving depression.  The K-9 Comfort Dogs of the Lutheran Church Charities Comfort Dog Ministry is an organization of volunteers and specially-trained canine therapists who have consoled people suffering from the aftermath of tragedies that have included the Boston Marathon bombing and the recent fires in Arizona. They have appeared at funerals, in classrooms and in hospitals. Making an appearance at the event will be Portage’s own Holy Cross Comfort Dogs, led by Pastor Tim Engel.

Homeless Animals Day is about awareness, but it will also focus on the challenges of our local animal welfare community as it works together toward a common goal. The event will feature a pet blessing at 2 p.m., costume contest at 4 p.m., pet photography and personalized paw print artwork opportunities. The day will end with a memorial tribute to the animals that have lost their lives and to the dedicated people who work toward alleviating the overwhelming flood of homeless animals.

Nearly 50 local vendors and animal organizations will fill the serene 33-acre park, and food and beverages will be available for purchase at the Waggin’ Tail Grill. Be prepared to purchase raffle tickets, have your dog’s nails trimmed for a good cause, visit with fellow pet-lovers and perhaps even meet your next best friend!
