Key NL Central series starts tonight
(AP) — The Cardinals and Brewers open a big four-game weekend series in Milwaukee tonight. The Brewers are riding an eight-game losing streak and have dropped out of first place in the National League Central. The Cardinals have won their last five games and have replaced Milwaukee in the standings. Entering tonight’s game the Cards have a three-game lead over the Brewers with 76 wins and 63 defeats, while the Brewers are 73-66.
On the mound for the Brewers tonight is 15-game winner Wily Peralta, who is facing Michael Wacha in his first Major League game since going down with a shoulder stress reaction. The Cards plan to limit Wacha to roughly 50 to 60 pitches against the Brewers. He threw 34 pitches in two innings in a Double-A game on Sunday.
The Tigers and Indians wrap up a four-game set in Cleveland tonight. The Tigers won the first two games of the series before losing last night. Each team can improve its position in the American League Central as first-place Kansas City has the night off. The Tigers trail the Royals by 1 1/2 games while the Indians are 5 1/2 back. Max Scherzer of the Tigers is looking for his 16th win of the season.
The remaining games tonight feature the Red Sox in New York against the Yankees, the Orioles home to the Reds, Toronto at Tampa Bay, the Mariners in Arlington to play Texas, Minnesota hosting the Angels and Arizona at San Diego.
