Juvenile Boot Camp Closing Postponed
September 9, 2014 — The Associated Press — State correction department officials are delaying the planned closing of a boot camp for juvenile offenders in LaPorte County.
Governor Mike Pence’s office said on Monday that any changes for Camp Summit were on hold for now. Camp Summit is Indiana’s only paramilitary style camp for juveniles.
Pence spokeswoman Kara Brooks told the “Times” that the governor told the Department of Correction to continue working with those who would be affected by the closing.
The department planned to close the boot camp on October 1st and transfer the 72 boys housed there to community-based programs or other state facilities. Indiana House Democratic leader Scott Pelath of Michigan City called the closing decision a “misalignment of priorities” and unnecessary with a 2 billion dollar state surplus.
