Indiana University looks to hand off natatorium
October 21, 2013 (AP) – Indiana University officials are looking to give up running the IUPUI natatorium that for years has hosted many of the country’s major swimming and diving events.
Indianapolis city leaders and the Indiana Sports Corp. are among those involved in discussions as IU officials also look for help in paying for several million dollars in maintenance and upgrade costs for the 31-year-old venue.
IU vice president Tom Morrison tells the Indianapolis Business Journal that the university is looking “under every rock for long-term solutions.”
Morrison says the natatorium’s pools and diving well are in good shape, but its roof, heating and air conditioning and electrical systems need to be replaced.
Officials for USA Swimming say it also needs modern video and scoreboards and other amenities common in newer facilities.
