Indiana Senate Takes Up HJR-3 Today
February 17, 2014 — Network Indiana —
A state Senate vote today will bring the gay-marriage debate to an end for the year. Eric Berman reports from the Statehouse..
President Pro Tem David Long says he expects the Senate to approve the amendment to put Indiana‘s existing gay-marriage ban in the constitution. Until a few weeks ago, that vote was expected to set the stage for a referendum in November. But the House deleted a second sentence banning civil unions as well, and the Senate declined to restore it. Because the amendment isn‘t the same as the one passed in 2011, it‘ll have to go through the legislature again next year or the year after, and can‘t reach voters till 2016.
