Indiana Political Party Chiefs Taljk About Shutdown

Share Tweet Email

October 4, 2013 — Indiana’s Democratic Party Chair says politicians in Washington need to stop pointing fingers and end the federal government shutdown.  But as Indiana Public Broadcasting’s Brandon Smith reports, he also says some Indiana Republican Congressmen are to blame for the ongoing stalemate:

State Democratic Party Chair John Zody’s comments came after 3rd District Congressman Marlin Stutzman’s remarks that House Republicans are not going to be disrespected in ongoing budget talks and that they have to, in his words, “get something out of this.”  Stutzman released a statement Thursday saying he misrepresented the budget debate and that, despite his comments, it’s clear people want both parties to work to reopen the government and –quote – “stop Obamacare’s pain.”  Zody says Hoosiers want the blame game to end:

“We shouldn’t be engaged in the business of finger-pointing in Washington.  We should be interested in getting the work of the federal government done and unfortunately some members of our congressional delegation have voted otherwise.”

Indiana Republican Party Chair Tim Berry says he’s not worried the shutdown will create consequences at the ballot box:

“I think good government and good public policy positions ultimately are what lead to ballot box decisions and certainly giving voters what they’re asking for and that is out of the constraints of Obamacare.”

Zody says using constituents’ interests to validate the shutdown of the federal government isn’t the right thing to do.  For Indiana Public Broadcasting, I’m Brandon Smith.
